Parque de la Ereta, Alicante
The main attraction of Alicante is the Santa Barbara castle, located on top of a cliff. The shortest way to the fortress is up the steps of one of the alleys near the church of St. Mary and the Museum of modern art.
From San Juan street begins a wide pedestrian road leading to the fortress on the slope of Monte Benacantil.
The road passes through the Park, built on the terraces of the mountain slope.
If you are not in a hurry, take one of the paths leading to the side of the main road.
Here you can walk on the wooden decking surrounded by flowering plants even in winter.
In addition, the terraces of the Park offer views of the Central part of Alicante.
And the Cordillera Betica and Sierra de Foncalent mountains.
Construction of the Park began in 1994. The main problem was to prevent erosion of terraces during the rainy season, for which they were reinforced with concrete slopes and provided water drainage. The slopes are decorated with ceramic panels with scenes of rural life.
And vases with flowers.
Coming closer to the cliff on which the castle is built, you can see some interesting creations of nature. As for example, this rocky ledge, where you can see the head of a bull or a horse.
Another result of the rains and winds, which formed a stone half-arch, resembling a swirling crest of the sea wave.
The park La Ereta occupies about 7 hectares, there are flower beds and alleys of olive trees, a cafe and a restaurant, an exhibition hall, playground. The park is open from 8 am to 10 PM.
